Locally owned, and still answering their own phones
By SwiftPro Heating, Cooling & Plumbing · Read October 5, 2026
We checked who owns 107 Northern Virginia heating, cooling and plumbing companies. 73 with an office here are still owned by the people who run them: no investment firm, corporation or franchisor above them. Here they are by county, with their Google rating and what they're licensed to fix.
Why the owner matters more than the name
Of the 107 companies we researched, 21 now answer to someone outside the company: an investment firm, a corporation, a franchisor or a holding company. Some of those names go back decades. The name on the van stays the same after a sale. The people setting the call quotas, the phone script and the prices don't.
A local owner isn't automatically better, and a sold company isn't automatically worse. The buyouts research found it splits company by company. What a local owner does give you is a person whose name is on the business and who lives with the reviews. If something goes wrong, there's someone to call who can actually fix it.
How we decided: the company's own website, its About page, the Better Business Bureau listing and the Virginia license record. No investor, parent company or franchisor found = locally owned. Every owner, with the record behind it, is on who owns them.

How to check a company's owner yourself
- Ask on the phone: “Who owns the company, and since when?” A local owner answers in one sentence. A pause, or “we're part of a family of brands,” tells you too.
- Read the privacy policy. “Our parent company” or “our affiliates” is often the first place a new owner shows up, long before the About page changes.
- Look at the license. The license number is on the van and the estimate. The holder's name on Virginia's lookup is the company that answers for the work.
- Check the trades on that license. HVAC and plumbing are separate. A company licensed for both can handle the gas line, the water heater and the furnace in one visit.
21 of the 73 hold HVAC and plumbing on the same license. Every company licensed for both, locally owned or not.
