What this job usually involves
A ductless mini-split is for the room the main system never kept comfortable: an addition, a sunroom, a converted garage, a finished attic or basement, the office over the garage. It's also how older houses on boilers and radiators get air conditioning without tearing into plaster. Each zone is one indoor head on a wall with its own thermostat, fed by a refrigerant line set from an outdoor unit, and it heats as well as cools, because it's a heat pump.
Before we sell you one, we check whether that cold room is really a closed damper, a crushed flex duct or a filter nobody has changed, because those cost far less to fix. If the whole house is uncomfortable, one mini-split is a bandage on the wrong problem. When ductless is the answer, the job is decided by how far the line set has to run, which head the room allows, and the circuit it needs. We're a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, and Mitsubishi is our first pick for ductless: its Hyper-Heating models keep heating well below zero.

Does a mini-split heat, or only cool?
Both. A ductless system is a heat pump. Modern cold-climate units keep making heat well below freezing, which covers anything a Northern Virginia winter does, and Mitsubishi Electric's Hyper-Heating models keep heating well below zero.
Why does a second zone cost so much more than a third?
Zone one carries the outdoor unit, the electrical and getting a crew to the house. Zone two often needs a bigger outdoor unit. By the third you're mostly paying for another head and line set. If you might want a second room done, price it now, because coming back later usually means a second outdoor unit.
How many rooms can one outdoor unit run?
Commonly four or five heads, depending on the equipment. The sizing has to be right, though. Too many heads hung off too small an outdoor unit is a system that disappoints everybody.
Is a mini-split loud?
Indoors it's one of the quieter things in the house. Outside it's comparable to a normal condenser, and it spends most of its life running at low speed instead of slamming on and off.
