A new tank is worth protecting where the supply runs hard, because hardness builds scale on the bottom of a tank or inside a tankless heat exchanger, and the burner or element then works harder to push through it.
Depending on your utility, hardness here ranges from under 3 to about 11 grains per gallon, and 7 or more counts as hard.
The signs are crusty faucets, spotted glasses, and sediment collecting at the bottom of the tank.
Testing at your tap comes first: hardness, chlorine, sediment, rust and iron, pressure, and the age and shape of your heater.
Two houses on one street can test differently, so a neighbor's numbers don't settle yours.
Then you see the options next to each other, and doing nothing is one of them.
Whatever you pick, flush the new heater once a year to clear what settles in it.
