He went to work right away, assessing the problem with our sump pump, explaining it to me, and providing a potential solution, including full transparency on pricing. The marine clay under a lot of yards here drains slowly, so groundwater keeps finding that hole in the basement floor.
Pumps rarely die without warning; you usually get weeks of hints.
A hum with no water moving often means the float is stuck against the side of the pit.
Short bursts, off and back on half a minute later, point to a check valve letting water fall back down.
In January, keep an eye on the discharge line outside; if it freezes, the pump keeps pushing against a blocked pipe until the motor burns out.
To test it, dump five gallons into the pit: the float rises, the pump kicks on in a few seconds, the level falls fast, and it shuts off cleanly.
Do that every March and August.
