This hot water heater went out at nearly 20 years old, and nobody in the house was surprised.
That's a long run. Around here a gas unit lasts eight to twelve years and an electric one ten to fifteen.
On a younger heater, no hot water usually comes down to the pilot or igniter if it's gas, or a reset button that tripped on the upper thermostat if it's electric.
Under about eight years old and dry underneath, a repair makes sense.
Past ten, ask for both prices, repair and replace, side by side.
At twenty there was nothing to weigh, and what this customer describes is a plain removal and install.
A full swap should cover more than the new unit: a permit and inspection, new connectors, a drain pan, a thermal expansion tank, fresh discharge piping off the relief valve, a draft test if it's gas, and haul-away of the old one.
Plan on two to four hours; the common sizes are usually on the truck already.
And if a 40 gallon was already running out on you, don't replace it with another 40.
