This one was a whole home humidifier, installed on a Friday evening.
People want one for winter, since cold outside air carries almost no moisture and running the heat dries it out more.
You notice it as a shock off every doorknob, gaps opening between floorboards, a piano slipping out of tune, or a house that feels colder than the thermostat claims.
Before you buy, set a hygrometer in the living room on a cold day with the heat on.
The EPA puts indoor humidity at 30 to 50 percent, so a 35 means you can skip it, and an 18 explains the shocks and the floors.
The install means tapping a nearby supply pipe with its own shutoff, running a drain, cutting the unit into the ductwork and sealing it, and wiring a humidistat to the furnace so it only adds moisture while warm air is moving.
With the plumbing close by, it's about half a day.
After that, change the water panel every fall; left alone for years, it scales over, stops working and starts dribbling where it shouldn't.
